JOCO ALLIANCE · GUIDE
The Heartland Soccer Association, explained
If you're a player or parent new to Kansas City soccer, "Heartland" comes up fast. Heartland Soccer Association is the regional league that ties together most competitive youth clubs in the KC metro — including Johnson County, KS. Here's a plain-English guide to how it works and how JoCo Alliance fits in.
What is Heartland Soccer?
Heartland Soccer Association is one of the largest youth soccer leagues in the United States, headquartered in Overland Park, KS. It runs league play, tournaments, and showcase events for clubs across Kansas, Missouri, and neighboring states. For most competitive clubs in Johnson County, Heartland is the primary league where weekend games are played.
Seasons
Heartland runs two main league seasons each year:
- Fall season — typically August through early November. Most clubs treat this as the primary competitive block.
- Spring season — typically March through late May. Divisions are re-seeded based on fall results.
Winter is generally used for training, futsal, and indoor friendlies rather than outdoor league play.
Age groups
Heartland uses standard US Youth Soccer birth-year age groups, from roughly U8 through U19. Ages are determined by the player's birth year, not their grade. Small-sided formats (7v7, 9v9) are used at younger ages, transitioning to 11v11 around U13.
Competition levels
Within each age group, teams are placed into tiered divisions based on skill and prior results. The general structure:
- Premier / top divisions — the most competitive tier at each age. Teams that consistently win move up.
- Division tiers (D1, D2, D3…) — competitive play stepped down from Premier, so teams find games at their level.
- Recreational / academy pathways — for players building fundamentals before entering competitive divisions.
Placement isn't fixed — teams are re-evaluated season to season, which is why a new club can climb quickly with the right group of players.
Registration windows
You register with a club first, not with Heartland directly. The club submits its teams into the league. General timing:
- Fall tryouts — most clubs hold tryouts in late spring or early summer for the following fall/spring cycle.
- Mid-year additions — many clubs will trial players between seasons if roster spots open.
Confirm exact dates with each club — they vary by age group and staff.
